Concerns about the chemicals in plastics are rising, with phthalates being a particular focus due to their potential health impacts. These chemical additives, essential for enhancing the properties of plastics, are not as strictly regulated as the base materials like polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). A recent study identified 16,000 chemicals in plastics, yet only 6% are internationally regulated.

Phthalates serve as plasticizers to make rigid polymers flexible and are found in products ranging from medical devices to household items. However, evidence suggests links between phthalates and reproductive health issues. Agencies such as the FDA and EPA are monitoring these chemicals closely.

A 2019 review revealed that phthalate metabolites are frequently detected in human urine at significant levels. Research from Southern California using silicone wristbands showed high concentrations of both traditional ortho-phthalates and newer non-ortho-phthalates. Despite regulatory efforts, exposure remains widespread.

Dr. Shanna Swan's research on "phthalate syndrome" highlights how prenatal exposure may affect fertility rates across generations. Her findings underscore the need for continued attention to these additives' health implications.

Efforts to address phthalate risks include state restrictions on certain chemicals and industry initiatives promoting safer alternatives like DEHT. The ongoing discussions around international treaties emphasize comprehensive assessment and regulation of chemical additives in plastics for a sustainable future.

RTI Innovation Advisors is working with clients to navigate these challenges by analyzing supply chains and evaluating safer options aligned with evolving regulations.
