COUNTY OF DURHAM: BOCC to Hold December 13th Regular Session Virtually

County of Durham issued the following announcement on Dec. 12. 

The Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met in Regular Session at 7p.m. This virtual option aligns with social distancing requirements to ensure the safety of citizens who wish to participate as well as Board members and Durham County staff. 

To view the BOCC meeting, visit the Durham Television Network (DTN) on Spectrum Channel 8. Replays are available on DTN along with AT&T U-verse Channel 99, Google Fiber Channel 8 and Frontier Communications Channel 70. Board Highlights:  

  • Chair Brenda Howerton called the December 13, 2021 Regular Meeting to order. Commissioner Heidi Carter led the Pledge of Allegiance. Commissioners led the attendees in a Moment of Silence to recognize the six juveniles who were shot, two of whom passed, early this morning in Durham. 
  • Monica Wallace, Clerk to the Board read the Announcements: 
1.Social Services Offers Low-Energy Assistance Program - The Durham County Department of Social Services Low-Income Energy Assistance (LIEAP) specialists will begin servicing residents ages 60 years old and older, along with those who are disabled and who receive Food and Nutrition Services with their applications to receive help with their energy bill on December 1st. On January 3, 2022, the LIEAP will be available for all Durham residents. Please call (919) 560-8192 to make a virtual appointment with LIEAP specialists on staff. Applications are also available online by visiting www.epass.nc.gov for those who are comfortable completing without assistance.

 2. Durham Residents Can Now Receive Additional Help with their Water Bill - The State of NC has awarded $38 million in federal funding to the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) to assist residents who are behind with payments or facing disconnection. Residents are asked to call 919-560-8000 to schedule a virtual appointment or visit the Human Services Building at 414 E. Main Street to pick up a paper application. 3. Volunteer for Cooperative Extension Advisory Council - The Durham Cooperative Extension is looking for a representative group of community members who have experience with County Cooperative Extension programming. 4. Help Durham County Families and Homes Get Better Connected - Take the NC Broadband Survey and let us know your connection needs and quality. Take the 5-minute survey at or text “internet” to 919-750-0553 to participate. 

5. Get Tickets for NAIA Football at Durham County Memorial Stadium - The NAIA will bring its 66th Football Championship and Senior Football Classic to Durham on December 17th and 18th. This game will feature two undefeated teams - Grand View and Morningside. Tickets are available by visiting www.durhamncsports.com

6. Join the Durham County EMS Team - Durham County EMS is now hiring EMTs and Paramedics! The application period is open, and the next assessment center will be held January 10 - 13, 2022. Please visit for more information and the apply.

8. Durham County Government will close most offices in observance of the winter holiday on Thursday, December 23rd, Friday December 24th and Monday, December 27th, 2021. All offices will reopen with their normal hours of operation on Tuesday, December 28th. 

Most offices will close again on Friday, December 31, 2021 in recognition of the New Year’s Day holiday and reopen on Monday, January 3, 2022.
