DURHAM POLICE DEPARTMENT: Traffic and Crash Team and Motor Unit Conducted Speed Enforcement Operations

Durham Police Department issued the following announcement on Aug. 28. 

Yesterday, the DPD’s Traffic and Crash Team (TACT) and Motor Unit conducted speed enforcement operations in two high-crash areas – N.C. 55 Highway near Longitude Drive and Interstate 85 near North Roxboro Street (this is one of this quarter’s Top 10 crash locations).

Officers stopped 24 vehicles on N.C. 55 and the highest speed recorded was 78 mph in a 50 mph zone. Sixteen of the 24 vehicles were traveling at 70 mph or higher. In addition to the speeding citations, officers issued four citations for driving while license revoked, two citations for no insurance, one child safety seat violation and three other violations.

Officers stopped 22 vehicles on Interstate 85 during the operation. The highest recorded speed was 87 mph in a 60 mph zone and 19 of the vehicles were traveling 80 mph or more. Officers also issued six citations for traffic offenses other than speeding. Officers will continue to conduct speed enforcement operations to help reduce fatal and serious crashes in Durham.
