Winston-Salem and Raleigh were both ranked in the top 25 of a new WalletHub study of the safest cities in the U.S, while Durham cracked the top 50.
Winston-Salem was ranked number 21, followed by Raleigh at number 22 and Durham at number 46. Charlotte came in at number 53, followed by Greensboro at number 60 and Fayetteville at number 112. The list, which included a total of 182 cities, was led by Columbia, Maryland.
The study, which comprised the 150 most populated cities in the U.S. and at least two of the most populated cities in each state, looked at home and community safety, natural-disaster risk and financial safety. Raleigh and Durham did best in the financial safety category, while Charlotte, Fayetteville, Winston-Salem and Greensboro scored best in natural-disaster risk.
Each city was given a weighted average across 41 relevant metrics and graded on a 100-point scale. St. Louis was ranked at the bottom.
