Congresswoman Valerie Foushee, representing North Carolina's 4th district, recently shared her views on the impact of potential changes to USAID funding through a series of tweets. Foushee has been serving in Congress since 2023 after replacing David Price and has a history of political service in North Carolina.
On March 7, 2025, Foushee expressed concern over the Trump Administration's priorities. She stated, "But the Trump Administration knows this. Still, they choose to prioritize political agendas over disease research and prevention." She emphasized her support for the Protect U.S. National Security Act aimed at safeguarding USAID.
In another tweet on the same day, she highlighted the potential consequences of shuttering USAID. Foushee noted that "The shuttering of USAID would affect 1,800 employees across 60 international development organizations in the Triangle region." She pointed out that North Carolina hosts over 900 global health institutions contributing significantly to jobs and the economy.
Additionally, Foushee addressed how USAID plays a crucial role in promoting global health both domestically and internationally. On March 7, she tweeted that "USAID is the primary way America promotes global health domestically and abroad." She warned that any freezes to its funding could severely hinder humanitarian aid efforts and lifesaving disease research.
