Durham County's Solid Waste Division plans to hold a Household Hazardous Waste collection event on May 17. The event, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at noon, will take place at the Northern Durham Convenience Site.
The collection effort is limited to residents possessing a current solid waste decal for 2024-2025, distributed with property tax bills the previous August. Participants without this decal will not be allowed to partake. Those needing a decal can contact the Tax Office at 919-560-0300.
The items eligible for disposal at the event encompass aerosol cans, fire extinguishers, batteries, garden materials, mercury, pesticides, pool chlorine, fuels, thermometers, paints, and fluorescent bulbs.
Materials excluded from this event include commercially produced waste, explosives, ammunition, medical waste, radioactive materials, and any unknown or unlabeled substances.
Durham County urges residents to responsibly dispose of hazardous items to minimize toxic exposure to humans and protect wildlife. Proper disposal also safeguards local ecosystems.
Inquiries about this event and other services by Durham County General Services’ Solid Waste Division can be addressed to recycle@dconc.gov or by phone at 919-560-0433.
