Duke University Health System (DUHS) is implementing temporary visitor restrictions at its hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers due to a rise in respiratory illnesses in the Triangle area. These limitations will start on January 6, 2025.
According to DUHS, daytime visitors for hospital and ambulatory surgery patients will be restricted to two individuals aged 12 and older. Overnight visitors must be at least 18 years old unless they are the parent or caregiver of a pediatric patient.
These measures are part of an effort to safeguard patients and curb the spread of influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 within the health system. The guidelines specify that no more than two visitors may see a patient at any given time. Additional visitor rules apply to certain patient groups.
Children under the age of 12 will not be allowed to visit hospitals or wards without prior approval from healthcare providers and only under special circumstances. Visitors are encouraged to wear masks while visiting patients and practice frequent hand washing. Masks and hand hygiene stations are provided throughout the facilities as effective precautions against respiratory viruses.
DUHS advises individuals with fever, cough, or other flu-like symptoms to stay home. The restrictions are temporary and will be reassessed as respiratory illness cases decrease in the Triangle area.
