Honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is the purpose of the annual Durham City-County Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Employee Observance Program. The upcoming celebration, jointly hosted by Durham’s local government organizations, will take place on Thursday, January 25, 2024. The program will begin at 11:30 a.m. inside First Presbyterian Church located at 305 E. Main St. in downtown Durham.

Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of African and African American Studies at Duke University, will be the keynote speaker for the event. Dr. Neal teaches courses in Black Popular Culture including signature courses on the history of Black Humor, Black Masculinity, and the Motown and American Culture. He is the author of six books and has been featured in several documentaries. At Duke, Neal directs the Center for Arts, Digital Culture and Entrepreneurship, which produces original digital content, including the weekly video podcast Left of Black, produced in collaboration with the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke.

The public is invited to enjoy the program which will also include remarks from local leaders and elected officials. Musical selections will be provided by singer, songwriter, and classically trained violinist Kimberly Michelle.
