City of Durham Police Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 23.
The District 3 Employee of the Month for December is Officer Eric Gaither of Squad 3B.
Officer Gaither had a busy month. In addition to answering calls for service, he conducted 77 directed and foot patrols, many in support of District 3’s Holiday Initiative. He also participated in speed enforcement initiatives, conducting 21 vehicle stops with eight citations written.
According to his supervisor, a specific call stands out. Officer Gaither responded to a domestic violence call where a male was suicidal and in possession of several knives. The subject stated that he did not want to live anymore. Officer Gaither spoke with him and showed genuine empathy in attempts at de-escalation and getting the individual help. Due to multiple factors, Officer Gaither was forced to deploy his Taser on the male to take him into custody safely. He was taken for further evaluation.
Officer Gaither’s supervisor noted that he calmly assessed the danger in the situation and worked to create a safe outcome for all involved. He said that Officer Gaither has a genuine concern for the community's health and safety, which not only fosters public confidence in the Durham Police but also demonstrates Officer Gaither’s stance as a leader within the squad.
Because of this, Officer Gaither is District 3’s Employee of the Month.
