A water main break near the intersection of North Duke Street and West Trinity Avenue had nearby residents without water and forced the Durham School of the Arts, a grades 6-12 school, to call for a virtual learning day Wednesday.

"Emergency work located at Duke Street at Trinity Avenue," Durham officials tweeted March 16. "Water service to residents in the area may be affected. Crews are working as quickly as they can to restore service. Customers should flush their bathtub’s cold water as services are restored."

A Durham Public Schools spokesperson said the water would be shut off for the day at the school. School officials chose to have students learn remotely because of the situation, CBS 17 News reported.

The water main break and presence of work crews led to some road closures in the area as well. The water company said in a later tweet that service was expected to be restored and Duke Street reopened by 5 p.m. Wednesday.
