The Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce canceled the First Responders Appreciation Breakfast in response to the COVID-19 and to keep people safe from the virus.
For the past six years, this event has acknowledged first responders that serve the city, Durham County, Duke University, Durham Technical Community College, North Carolina Central University and North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce said in a Sept. 2 release.
While the event is canceled for the regular in-person breakfast, the chamber will still deliver meals and gift cards to local restaurants to celebrate these individuals during the week on Sept. 11.
"As we work through supporting our families, friends and neighbors during these unprecedented times, it's clear that the Community Champions who have been on the frontlines for all of us include not only first responders but also frontline healthcare, education, childcare and other essential workers," the chamber said in its press release. "To help recognize their ongoing efforts, the Durham Chamber is excited to honor these individuals alongside our first responders."
