Durham City is putting a focus on carbon neutrality and renewable energy as it continues efforts to become a more sustainable community.
Amy Blalock, host of Bull City Today, said the city is developing a Carbon Neutrality and Renewable Energy Action Plan, which will help guide the city on sustainability, according to a Bull City Today segment posted on Facebook on July 3. The program will help develop strategies on how to achieve carbon neutrality in the city and renewable energy for Durham's facilities and operations.
The city has a Sustainability Roadmap, which calls for Durham to update this year the Local Action Plan, was created in 2007. The Roadmap also calls for a fundable action plan for the goal of carbon neutrality and renewable energy sources, Bull City Today reported. In addition to a fundable action plan, the Roadmap will have to city reduce the amount of energy by 30% used in city-owned buildings.
The city of Durham expects the Renewable Action Plan to have its final version complete by mid-June 2021, which would then set the city up to begin the plan.
