City of Durham issued the following announcement on June 29.
Any person interested in Durham Police Department (DPD) crime incidents, arrests, and calls for service can now find and download these data sets through the expanded Open Data website. Open Data is the online resource launched by Durham city and county governments in 2015. Recently the DPD Crime Analysis Unit was able to expand the public data the department provides on the Open Durham website. The data sets provide detailed information to researchers, media, students and anyone with an interest – whether for professional or personal use.
“We’re pleased to announce the completion of a long-term goal to provide commonly requested information in a way that is easily accessible and an efficient use of resources,” says Analytical Services Manager Jason Schiess. “The Crime Analysis Unit continually strives to improve how it renders service to the public to help foster awareness, engagement and collaboration to help meet public safety goals.”
The City of Durham’s Strategic Plan for fiscal year 2019-2021 includes an initiative to “Make all legally available data freely accessible to public, share tools on how to use it,” which is part of the Innovative and High Performing Organization goal. Although the Durham Police Department has provided crime data on the site since its inception in 2015, which continues to be updated nightly, the new sets of information further demonstrate the City’s commitment to fostering a culture of transparency.
Records pertaining to incidents, arrests and calls for service date back to 2006 and will be updated annually as well. Users should be aware that information is provided at the record-level only. The data is not aggregated (quantified or summarized). Click here to search data and download information. On www.durhampolice.com, click “Crime Statistics” to access the Open Data page(s).

Durham Open Data has three main goals: to make government held data available to the public as permitted by public records laws; enhance the data-related capacity of City and County employees; and provide support for City and County initiatives that will have meaningful impact on City and County residents.
Durham’s Open Data program is managed jointly by the City of Durham’s Technology Solutions Department and the County of Durham’s Information Services and Technology Department. City of Durham and Durham County governments launched Open Data in June 2015. The data portal allows users to explore, visualize and download county and city data. In addition to local data, Open Data also features data sets from state and federal open data sources.
The Open Data catalog is organized into 10 categories including transportation, social services, government administration and finance, economic development, education, health, public safety, sports and leisure, civic planning and environment. The categories are populated with nearly 200 data sets and maps from multiple Durham city and county departments. The datasets and maps range in topics from North Carolina school performance to Durham bicycle trails.
