Duke University Hospital is actively managing the aftermath of a burst pipe that led to flooding on December 26. The hospital's priority remains the safety of patients and staff as they continue cleanup and water mitigation efforts.
Concerns have been raised regarding discolored flood water. The ruptured pipe was part of a chilled water line used for heating and cooling. While this water is not suitable for drinking, it is treated to prevent biological growth, corrosion, and scale.
As the water moved through ceilings and walls, it collected debris. Duke University's Occupational & Environmental Safety Office (OESO), Infection Prevention team, and hospital leadership are collaborating to ensure that recovery efforts proceed safely and efficiently.
The flooding affected the first floor near the Emergency Department and adjacent areas but did not impact inpatient units or surgical suites located on other floors.
Emergency patients arriving by their own means are being treated in alternate locations within the hospital. Some emergency department beds have reopened, with plans to open more beds, along with the triage area and waiting room, by the weekend.
Ambulance traffic remains diverted; however, resuming normal service is a priority. The hospital expressed gratitude to EMS partners and local healthcare facilities for helping maintain urgent medical care access for the community.
Efforts are ongoing to restore the high standard of care expected from Duke University Hospital while minimizing disruptions during this challenging event.
