The North Carolina Courage announced on Monday that they will waive defenders Julia Dorsey and Landy Mertz. This decision comes ahead of the team's full end-of-season roster announcement scheduled for Tuesday.
Both players, who were drafted in 2024, made their professional debuts during their rookie seasons. Mertz debuted with North Carolina, while Dorsey played on loan with Dallas Trinity FC in the USL Super League.
Julia Dorsey was selected in the third round from the University of North Carolina, where she was a two-sport athlete. She missed her senior soccer season due to an injury sustained while playing lacrosse. In August, she joined Dallas Trinity FC on loan and played regularly during the fall portion of their inaugural season.
Landy Mertz was a fourth-round pick from Pittsburgh and was recognized as a two-time All-ACC performer. She made her professional debut on May 24 by substituting in at the 84th minute against Houston Dash during regular season play. On July 31, she scored her first professional goal in the 90th minute against Monterrey during the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup group stage, contributing to the Courage's qualification for the semifinals.
With these waivers, following the commencement of the end-of-season waiver wire, North Carolina Courage will have 23 active players along with one player loaned out and another on the injured list.
