The North Carolina Courage has announced a three-year contract extension for defender Ryan Williams, securing her position with the team through the 2027 NWSL season. Previously contracted until 2025, this new agreement ensures Williams remains a key player for the Courage in the long term.
Williams has been an outstanding defensive force in the NWSL during 2024, leading all defenders with 55 tackles and 54 interceptions, placing her second overall in these categories. Her offensive contributions are also notable, with more passes reaching the final third than any other defender in the league this season. Additionally, she ranks among the top five defenders with 22 chances created and 117 duels won.
Expressing her enthusiasm about the extension, Williams stated: “Re-signing with the Courage means everything to me. I am so honored and so grateful to be extending my contract for three more years." She expressed appreciation for her time with the club since joining in 2018 and thanked coach Sean Nahas and her teammates for their support.
Coach Nahas highlighted Williams' commitment and impact on the team: “This extension is a culmination of commitment, dedication, drive, willingness to learn, effort and coachability." He praised her as one of the best right backs in the league.
Chief Soccer Officer Curt Johnson echoed these sentiments: “This is so well deserved for Ryan. She has put in the work every single day behind the scenes to earn more and more playing time and opportunities."
Drafted by the Courage as their final pick in 2018 after a successful collegiate career at TCU, Williams steadily increased her role within the team before becoming a regular starter in 2023. This year marks another peak performance from her, setting personal records across various metrics.
Throughout her tenure with North Carolina Courage, Williams has contributed to winning seven trophies including two NWSL Shields and two NWSL Championships. At TCU, she was recognized for her talents with several accolades such as being named to First Team All-Midwest Region.
The Courage will face Kansas City Current on Saturday in an NWSL playoff quarterfinal match scheduled at noon ET on CBS and Paramount+.
