City of Durham Announces Service Changes for Christmas and New Year's

Most City of Durham offices, including City Hall and all non-emergency City facilities and operations, will be closed to the public on Monday, December 25; Tuesday, December 26; and Monday, January 1 in observance of Christmas and New Year’s. 

Curbside Solid Waste Collections

  • Solid Waste Management Department services including garbage, recycling, and yard waste will be delayed by one business day beginning Tuesday, Dec. 26, through at least the first full week of January.
  • The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility, and the Household Hazardous Waste Center will be closed on Saturday, December 23; Monday, December 25; and Monday, January 1.
  • To sign up for collection day alerts and reminders for holiday service changes, visit the department’s webpage or download their free Durham Rollout smartphone app available in the Apple and Google Play stores.
Free Live Tree Drop-Off Options

Live trees will be accepted for free disposal at the City’s Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, located at 2115 E. Club Blvd., beginning Tuesday, January 2 through Saturday, February 3. The hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. 

Live trees may also be dropped off at no charge at the following seven park locations on Saturday, January 6; Saturday, January 13; Saturday, January 20; and Saturday, January 27 from 7 a.m. to noon. Solid Waste Management crews will be on site each of these Saturdays to assist.

  • Valley Springs Park, 3805 Valley Springs Rd.
  • Rock Quarry Park, 701 Stadium Dr.
  • Merrick-Moore Park, 632 N. Hoover Rd.
  • Southern Boundaries Park, 3400 Third Fork Rd.
  • Bethesda Park, 1814 Stage Rd.
  • Campus Hills (parking lot), 2000 S. Alston Ave.
Free Curbside Collections for Yard Waste and Exempt Service Customers Only

Free curbside collections for live trees are only available to current yard waste customers and current exempt service customers. Curbside live tree collections will take place from Tuesday, January 2 through Saturday, February 3, and customers should place their tree at the curb on their normal collection day. A tree collection will not count toward a free brush collection for yard waste customers.

Live Tree Disposal Instructions

All live trees left at any of the seven free drop-off locations as well as curbside must adhere to the following disposal instructions:

  • Trees must be cut in half if taller than six feet.
  • Trees must have all decorations and hardware removed including tinsel, lights, garland, ornaments, nails, and stands. 
  • Trees should not be inside bags.
City Council Meeting

The City Council meeting is re-scheduled for Tuesday, January 2, beginning at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall.

  • This regular business meeting will be livestreamed on the City’s website; on the City's YouTube, Facebook, and X (formerly known as Twitter) pages; and on Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV through the free Boxcast app. 
  • This meeting will also be televised live on Durham Television Network (Frontier channel 70 and AT&T U-verse channel 99).

Parks and Recreation

  • Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) administrative office will be closed Monday, December 25, and Tuesday, December 26, and will reopen on Wednesday, December 27.  
  • DPR recreation centers and indoor pools will be closed beginning Sunday, December 24, and will reopen on Wednesday, December 27.
  • All DPR facilities will be closed on Monday, January 1, and will reopen on Tuesday, January 2.

Downtown Parking

  • The Park Durham Customer Service Center will be closed on Monday, December 25; Tuesday, December 26; and Monday, January 1. 
  • On City-designated holidays, downtown parking is free in on-street parking spaces, in some City-owned parking garages, and in City-owned surface parking lots. 
  • To check the Special Event Parking Schedule, where the $7 per vehicle rate goes into effect in the Durham Centre, 90 minutes before scheduled events, visit the Special Event Parking Calendar.
GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS

  • Holiday service is available on most GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS routes with the exception of Monday, December 25. On Sunday, December 24 service ends at 7:30 p.m.

Durham One Call

  • Durham One Call will be closed on Monday, December 25; Tuesday, December 26; and Monday, January 1. Residents may submit service requests in the following ways, and staff will forward requests for City services to the appropriate department on the next business day:
  • Make an online service request.
  • Use the free Durham One Call smartphone app available in the Apple and Google Play stores.
  • Send a text to 919-813-6315.
  • Leave a message at 919-560-1200.
Water and Sewer Emergencies

  • Water main break and sewer overflow calls for service placed after-hours, on weekends, or on City-recognized holidays should be directed to the Water Management Department’s after-hours emergency number at 919-560-4344, which will dispatch on-call crews.
