County of Durham issued the following announcement on Jul. 22.
Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead will lead DCSO’s local welcome of a national caravan honoring law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty or lost by illness this upcoming Friday. DCSO personnel Lt. Terry Sampson and Senior Detention Officer Alexander Pettiway will be recognized at the special ceremony.
According to event organizers, multiple riders will escort a 43-foot long, 14-feet high trailer into the flat surface parking lot at the Sheriff’s Office on Friday, July 23, just before 11:00 a.m. The exact location is the entrance into the Sheriff’s Office parking lot on South Roxboro Street between South Dillard & West Pettigrew Streets in Downtown Durham. The main trailer will display photographs of all officers being honored across America.

For the 84 days between May 28 and August 19 of 2021, the caravan is traveling over 22,000 miles across the United States visiting cities and police departments to honor the men and women of law enforcement who paid the ultimate price in their service to local communities in 2020. The “End of Watch Ride to Remember” includes a group of motorcycle riders from the State of Washington escorting the decorated trailer. Last year, the group honored 146 fallen officers across America in 2019. This year, the number is 338 from 2020.
