While many places are creating face masks to help tackle COVID-19, Kingsdown converted three of its plants to producing hospital beds.
The company, with locations in Mebane, is producing medical-grade mattresses and motion bed frames that meet safety and health care standards for medical centers, according to a press release.
"In only 5 days, we managed to implement a secure local supply chain capable of supplying the American and Canadian governments with a new hospital bed concept," Kingsdown Zedbed Vice President David Gelinas said in a statement on April 9.
Kingsdown board chairman Mike James said the company is contacting North American hospitals to ensure the company can meet the demand of hospital beds.
"We are able to deliver mattresses or beds anywhere they may be needed in North America and stand ready to do our part to help," James said in the release.
The mattresses will have a poly core that is covered in medical vinyl, the press release said. The mattresses are flame resistant and have anti-fungal properties. The bed frames are adjustable and have legs with three height options.
"We want to do our part to help with this global crisis and have set up our factories to manufacture hospital and emergency-care grade beds," President and Chief Executive Officer of Kingsdown Frank Hood said in the release. "For a company whose core values are comfort, support and well-being, it's a natural move for us to help out any way we can."
