COUNTY OF DURHAM: Manager Sowell to Present Budget Recommendations for Fiscal Year 2022-2023

Budget

County of Durham issued the following announcement on May 2.

Durham County Manager Dr. Kimberly J. Sowell will present her recommended budget for Fiscal Year 2022-2023 to the Durham Board of County Commissioners on Monday, May 9, 2022. The presentation will take place during the BOCC’s Regular Session scheduled at 7 p.m. in the Commissioners Chambers, located at Durham County Administration I Building, 200 E. Main Street.

Manager Sowell’s recommendations are met with great expectation from the Board, as well as the public as the impact of the COVID pandemic continues to be experienced. The recommended budget is created to align with the key areas of focus communicated during Board of County Commissioners recent budget retreat. This will be Manager Sowell’s first presentation of a recommended budget to the Board since joining Durham County Government in March 2022.

Copies of the recommended budget will be available to the public online on the Durham County website, on the Budget Department webpage here as a viewable or downloadable pdf document. Requests for an electronic copy of the budget proposal should be directed to publicinformationoffice@dconc.gov. Residents without access to an electronic device to receive the proposed budget are invited to visit the County’s Regional Libraries where Wi-Fi and computers are available. Hard copies of the FY 2022-23 Manager’s Recommended budget will be available in the Clerk to the Board’s Office located on second floor of the Durham County Administration I Building.

Once the budget is adopted by the Board, details will be accessible on the County’s Budget webpage.

There are up to five Budget Work Sessions planned between May 17 - June 8, 2022. For questions about session dates and times, contact the Durham Clerk to the Board at (919) 560-0025 or clerk@dconc.gov. A public hearing for the FY 2022-2023 Budget is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, May 23, 2022. The hearing will take place in the Commissioners’ Chambers.

The public is welcome to attend all meetings of the BOCC, including the upcoming presentation of the recommended budget. Seating is limited inside the Chambers due to social distancing guidelines. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis, with priority given to County staff. A low-capacity overflow seating area will be provided in the lobby on the second floor of the Administration Building.

While social distancing will be established with seat arrangements, in-person attendees are reminded of the benefits of masking while in indoor spaces populated by others.

Residents who wish to participate in meetings are encouraged to continue using the virtual option and watch live on the County’s website.

In coming weeks, residents will be invited to make comments about the recommended budget by accessing the County’s Budget Comment Portal or

by going to the Durham County Budget Department webpage. Questions about the proposed budget should be directed to the Durham County Manager’s Office by calling (919) 560-0000 or emailing publicinformationoffice@dconc.gov.
