CITY OF DURHAM: Apply By April 12 for Durham's Virtual Community Police Academy

City of Durham issued the following announcement on Mar. 10.

Community Police Academy is your opportunity to learn more about the operations of the Durham Police Department. Through real-world scenarios, engagement with command staff, and more, gain greater understanding of what it's like to be a police officer.

The department is now accepting online applications for its next virtual Community Police Academy that will run April 19, 2022 to May 19, 2022. See details below.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Community Police Academy is the premier program for those wanting to know more about the operations of the Durham Police Department.

As is feasible during the year, either virtual or in-person academies may be offered. These academies provide first-hand knowledge and front-line experiences. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about various divisions, such as Criminal Investigations and Forensics. Also, various hands-on activities such as the use of force simulator, will give participants the opportunity to be in the shoes of a police officer. The program begins with students meeting members of the executive command staff and concludes with a graduation ceremony for all students who meet the attendance requirements.

Open to:

  • Durham County residents (ages 16 and up)
  • Durham business owners
  • Durham City and County government employees
  • Local, credentialed media representatives
  • Civilian Police Review Board members
SPRING 2022 PROGRAM DETAILS

Dates: April 19 to May 19, 2022

  • Online sessions will be held via Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Some in-person sessions may be scheduled as feasible.
  • Applicants must successfully pass a background check to be enrolled.
  • To officially graduate from the academy participant(s) must attend at least 9 of the 10 sessions.
