CITY OF DURHAM: Durham Parks and Recreation to Host Summer Connect Program

Register

City of Durham issued the following announcement on July 16.

Durham Parks and Recreation to Host Summer Connect Program

Youth Ages 6-17 Participate in Summer Fun

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) will offer a modified version of summer camp for youth in the 6-12 and 13-17 age groups.

The 2020 Summer Connect Program will be offered on Monday-Friday on July 20 through August 7 from 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. depending on the program site. The goal of the program is to provide participants with a meaningful social experience in a fun and safe setting.

With guidance from the North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education and other park and recreation agencies, DPR will follow a standard protocol to prevent the spread of the virus. Modifying activities, increasing cleaning of the equipment and surfaces, and limiting the number of participants to 9 children per group, are some of the safety measures that DPR will put in place to ensure the safety of participants, their families, and DPR staff.

Due to space limitations, participants must apply for entry to the program through a lottery system. Applications must be received on or before the specified deadline for each program week.

Participants will be selected each week and will be notified by email and phone if chosen. Registrants must pay the Summer Connect Program in full within 48 hours of the selection to secure a spot. Spaces for each location will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Only one lottery application per family is allowed; however, if a parent/guardian includes a request for the number of children in their household, all of them will be placed in the program space permitting.

Participants not selected will be placed on a waiting list, and if a space becomes available, DPR will contact the person next in line. Once contacted, they must register and pay in full on the same day.

DPR’s Sliding Fee Scale (SFS) program applies to the Summer Connect Program. Residents who are currently on an SFS receive the applicable discount at the time of registration. Those who previously had an SFS rate that has expired must submit a new application, DPR Sliding Fee Scale Application. SFS Applications may take 5-7 days to process.

For more information about the program to include cost, lottery guidelines, and application, visit DPRPlayMore.org. Beginning July 20, residents can call the DPR office at 919-560-4355 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. for more details or registration assistance.
