City of Durham issued the following announcement on Mar. 2.

CALEA Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comments

The Durham Police Department will be hosting an assessment team from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) March 9-12, 2020. This site-based assessment is part of the department’s re-accreditation process as we seek our ninth CALEA accreditation award.  The accreditation program requires agencies to comply with standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

As part of the assessment, CALEA requires agencies to provide opportunities for the public and department personnel to communicate with the assessors regarding the department’s services or compliance with accreditation standards. These opportunities include:

Telephone Call-in Session - Assessors will be available to receive unscreened and unrecorded telephone calls from the public on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Assessors may be contacted at (919) 560-4594 during that time frame.

Public Information Session - Assessors will be available to listen to the community and department members on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, starting at 5 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at DPD Headquarters (602 E. Main St. Durham, NC 27701). The session will conclude when there are no more speakers.

Telephone comments and appearances at the public information session will be limited to 10 minutes.

Public Comments/Written Correspondence - Written comments may be mailed to Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc., 13575 Heathcote Blvd., Suite 320, Gainesville, VA 20155, or emailed to calea@calea.org. Persons submitting written comments are requested to specify that their comments are regarding the Durham Police Department in North Carolina, so they are not confused with a similarly named agency in another state.

If the public has questions regarding the specific standards or standard topics, they may contact the Durham Police Department’s Accreditation Manager, Diana Palladino, at (919) 560-4581.
