The City of Durham announced on April 23 that S. Mangum Street will be closed between Pettigrew Street and Jackie Robinson Drive from 7 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. tomorrow due to ongoing work on the American Tobacco Waterline Phase 2 Project.
The closure is necessary because of poor pavement conditions, which have raised concerns about keeping lanes open with steel plates during construction activities. Originally, one lane was planned to remain open during business hours while the waterline was being installed at Dillard Street, with two lanes available outside those hours.
However, due to the state of the road surface, contractors determined it would not be feasible or safe to maintain even a second lane using steel plates. Work will proceed through the night in an effort to progress far enough across S. Mangum Street so that two lanes can be reopened for traffic after the closure period ends.
During this time, drivers will be detoured via Ramseur Street, Fayetteville Street, and Jackie Robinson Drive. City officials also noted that there are no scheduled events at DPAC or DBAP this evening that would affect traffic patterns related to the closure.
