U.S. Government: Elected Officials

  • U.S. Rep. Valerie Foushee (D-Durham)

Valerie Foushee represents North Carolina’s Fourth District which includes Alamance, Durham, Granville, Orange, and Person Counties and parts of Caswell County.

Before she began serving in Congress, Valerie worked as an administrator for the Chapel Hill police department and served 25 years as a local and state elected official. She went from serving on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board, to being the first African American woman elected to chair the Orange County Board of Commissioners, to serving in the North Carolina State House and the North Carolina State Senate.

In Congress, Valerie serves on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and is the Vice Ranking Member of the Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee and a member of the Highways and Transit Subcommittee. She also serves on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and is the Ranking Member of the Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee and a member of the Energy Subcommittee.

Valerie was born and raised in Orange County and received her undergraduate degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. She is married to her high school sweetheart, Stanley, and they are parents of two sons and one grandson.

  • U.S. Rep. Jeff Jackson (NC)

Congressman Jeff Jackson is a dad, husband and soldier. He is in his 20th year of military service, having enlisted after the attacks of September 11th, trained at Ft. Bragg, and served in Afghanistan. He continues to serve today as a Major in the Army National Guard.

After deploying to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Congressman Jackson attended law school at UNC-Chapel Hill with help from the G.I. bill, before serving as an assistant district attorney in Gaston County.

In Gaston County, he tried more than one hundred cases. In the process, he saw firsthand how a failure to properly invest in and prioritize public education, economic development, mental health care, and criminal justice reform was harming people and families across North Carolina.

Congressman Jackson spent eight years as a North Carolina State Senator, representing Mecklenburg County. He dedicated much of his time in the General Assembly to reforming the criminal justice system, including working to close the consent loophole, decrease unnecessary charges and arrests, and improve our expungement laws.

As a state Senator, Rep. Jackson was outspoken about the need to reform our redistricting process so that voters can choose who represents them, not the other way around. The first bill he ever filed in Raleigh was to end gerrymandering by establishing an independent redistricting commission.

Now, Congressman Jackson is the first person to represent North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District, which includes parts of Mecklenburg and Gaston counties.

Jeff and his wife, Marisa, live in Charlotte with their three children: Haden (14), Owen (7), and Avery (4).

  • U.S. Sen. Ted Budd (R-N.C.)

U.S. Senator Ted Budd grew up on a cattle and commercial chicken farm in rural Davie County, North Carolina. Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, Senator Budd learned the importance of faith, hard work, and common-sense decision-making at an early age.

While traveling on a Christian mission trip in the former Soviet Union in 1991, Senator Budd met a fellow student, Amy Kate, and they soon began dating and eventually were married in 1994. Senator Budd and Amy Kate have three children and still live in Davie County.

Senator Budd is a graduate of Appalachian State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1994. He and Amy Kate both attended and graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary, where Senator Budd earned a Masters of Theology and Educational Leadership in 1998. Senator Budd also holds a Master of Business Administration from Wake Forest University, which he earned in 2007.

Senator Budd is a proud father of a Stars and Stripes recipient and an Eagle Scout, and he also served as an Assistant Scoutmaster. He and Amy Kate homeschooled their three children, and Senator Budd served as a board member of North Carolinians for Home Education.

In 2010, Senator Budd was approached by a friend regarding the purchase of a bankrupt gun range in Rural Hall, North Carolina for a local police department to conduct firearms training, and he did so. Later, the range was opened to the public. The store’s motto is: “Helping our community responsibly enjoy firearms.”

When an opportunity presented itself after redistricting opened up North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District in 2016, Senator Budd decided to run for the seat having never sought public office before. The campaign focused on bringing a businessman’s outlook to our nation’s capital. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives on November 8, 2016.

Senator Budd served three terms in the U.S. House. During his tenure, Senator Budd was a strong supporter of the America First agenda. He was a fierce advocate for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which reduced taxes for nearly all Americans. He served on the Whip Team to gather the votes for the United States–Mexico–Canada trade Agreement in 2019, which opened up more North Carolina agricultural products to be sold in Canada and Mexico.

Senator Budd has been an avid and consistent supporter of law enforcement and the rule of law, having repeatedly voted to increase funding for local police departments across North Carolina. He was also an early supporter of building a wall on the southern border to stop the flow of drugs, human trafficking, and criminals into our country.

Senator Budd has always stood for American strength on the world stage. Whether it comes to challenging China, standing up to Russian aggression, or being tough on Islamic terrorists, Senator Budd has always supported the U.S. Armed Forces, our veterans, and their families.

Closer to home, Senator Budd has been a strong believer in the sanctity of human life, the value of family, and religious freedom. He believes that parents should be in the driver’s seat when it comes to where their children go to school and what they are being taught.

In 2021, Senator Budd launched his campaign for the U.S. Senate to fight for all of North Carolina and to make life better for working families across the state. He was elected on November 8, 2022.

Senator Budd serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee; the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee; and the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee.

  • Former U.S. Sen. J. D. Vance (R-Ohio)

JD Vance is a United States Senator for the great state of Ohio. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022 and sworn into office on January 3rd, 2023.

JD was born and raised in Middletown, Ohio, a once flourishing American manufacturing town where Ohioans could live content, middle-class lives on single incomes. Over time, many of those good jobs disappeared, and JD’s family suffered the effects along with many others.

Turbulence was common at home and at school. His grandmother, called Mamaw, was his saving grace. Her tough love and discipline kept him on the straight and narrow. A “blue dog” Democrat, she owned 19 handguns and nurtured a deep Christian faith in herself and her family. She died in 2005, shortly after JD enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

JD went on to serve our nation in the Iraq War, then graduated from The Ohio State University and Yale Law School. He wrote a bestselling book, Hillbilly Elegy, which was turned into a Netflix movie. He also started a business dedicated to growing jobs and opportunity in the American heartland.

JD believes Ohioans deserve better. And he aims to fight for it in the U.S. Senate.
