The Garmin Marathon Series will take place in Durham on May 2, bringing thousands of runners to city streets and trails for a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K. Several roads and local trails are set to close throughout the event for safety.

The event is expected to affect travel in downtown Durham as well as areas along the American Tobacco Trail and Third Fork Creek Trail. Organizers said all races will start at 359 Blackwell St., with the full marathon, half marathon, and 10K beginning at 7 a.m., followed by the 5K at 7:20 a.m. All races are scheduled to finish by about 1:35 p.m., after which streets and trails will reopen.

Race routes include downtown Durham during their opening miles before finishing at Wallace Wade Stadium on Duke University’s campus. A post-race celebration is planned at the stadium. Streets will reopen on a rolling basis as runners pass through each section. Shuttle service along city streets will transport participants from the finish area back to the starting point.

Organizers encourage race participants who are visiting from out of town to park near the starting line, including downtown parking decks or near access points for the American Tobacco Trail. Packet pickup for registered runners is available at CCB Plaza on April 30 from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m., and again on May 1 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.; Parrish Street and Market Street will be closed during these times.

Residents and visitors should allow extra travel time or use alternate routes during packet pickup periods as well as race hours due to anticipated congestion.

More information about course maps for all four races can be found on the Garmin Marathon Series Durham website.
