A former school bus driver has been arrested and charged following allegations of sexual misconduct with a middle school student, according to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation began in August 2025 when the mother of a female student reported to authorities that her daughter had been involved in sexual activities with the suspect starting in November 2024. Following an inquiry by the Special Victims Unit, officials determined there was sufficient evidence to support the allegations.

Kenneth Arnold Thompson Jr. was taken into custody at his residence in Burlington, North Carolina. He is currently being held without bond at the Durham County Detention Facility. The charges against him include three counts of statutory rape of a child under 15, one count of first-degree statutory sex offense, and one count of sexual activity with a student.

“Due to the nature of the crime and the age of the victim, no further information will be released,” stated officials from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office. “This investigation remains active, and additional charges are pending.”
