The Durham Police Department announced on Apr. 16 that it has opened a public comment portal as part of its ongoing efforts to comply with standards set by The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), Incorporated.

The department said the portal allows members of the community to submit comments regarding agency compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in service, delivery of public safety services, and its overall candidacy for accredited status. The initiative aims to provide information supporting continuous improvement and encourage professional excellence within the department.

Comments submitted through the portal can include commendations or concerns about the police department’s operations. However, officials noted that CALEA is not an investigatory body and submissions should not be used to report incidents requiring investigation. “Additionally, there will be no response other than acknowledgement to submissions; however, the information will be considered in context to its relevancy to compliance with standards and the tenets of CALEA Accreditation,” according to the announcement.

The accreditation process is intended to help law enforcement agencies improve their policies and practices while strengthening trust within their communities. Residents interested in participating can access the public comment portal at http://cimrs2.calea.org/336.

As law enforcement agencies across the country seek greater transparency and accountability, opportunities like this allow community members a direct way to provide input into local policing practices.
