Durham Police Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 28.

The Water Management Department advises customers to use caution when contacted by an unverified person claiming to be a City of Durham representative. The City will never ask the customer to provide a credit card or prepaid debit card number over the phone.

The water management department will never send employees to collect payment in person or ask a customer to pay anywhere other than an authorized payment location. For more information on where and how to pay, visit https://durhamnc.gov/488/Central-Cashiering
