Durham residents turned out at Atria Southpoint Walk, an assisted living facility in Durham, to honor veterans last week during the Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony.
“It’s just a recognition of their contribution to our country,” U.S. Army veteran Phil Hopkins said of the ceremony in a report on ABC 11 News. “I think it’s a nice step that they take.”
Nearly 20 veterans received certificates of recognition and special pins that were presented by Durham Mayor Elaine O’Neal this year.
O’Neal said that because her father was a World War II veteran, Veterans Day holds a special place in her heart.
”Coming in here and seeing these men, it just helps my heart so much,” O’Neal told ABC 11 News. “Our veterans have given so much to this country for us to be here… for me to be here. So I’m just honored that I was able to be a part of such a beautiful celebration today.”
