Durham County Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead has released crime data for the first half of 2025, showing a 26% decrease in what the agency classifies as the “Top 8 Crimes” compared to the same period last year. From January through June, there were 31 incidents reported, down from 42 during the same timeframe in 2024.

The Top 8 Crimes tracked by the Durham County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) include murder, sex offenses, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary or breaking and entering, larceny (including motor vehicle break-ins), motor vehicle theft, and arson.

Sheriff Birkhead credited both deputies and specialized units for their efforts in reducing crime. “We applaud the hard work of DCSO deputies patrolling 24/7 and specialized crime units who are working together with our community to reduce crime. We remind the public to report any suspicious activity – if you ‘see something, say something’ – by calling 911 immediately or 919-560-0900,” Birkhead said.

In June alone, DCSO recovered 17 stolen vehicles across Durham County that had been reported taken from Durham and surrounding areas.

Firearm-related incidents for the first six months of 2025 totaled 111. Of these cases, law enforcement seized 69 firearms; another 25 were reported stolen; and 17 were recovered or found.
