The City of Durham announced on April 7 that it has started a national search for its next chief of police and is asking residents to participate in the process by completing an online survey.
The city says the survey will help shape the qualities and priorities for the next police chief. Residents can complete the survey in English or Spanish until 5 p.m. on Friday, April 24. The questions focus on relationships between police and the community, priorities for leadership, and key traits needed in a new chief. Responses will be summarized by Developmental Associates, LLC, which is managing the hiring process, and given to City Manager Bo Ferguson to inform recruitment decisions.
“Our Police Department’s mission makes clear that safety, partnership, and quality of life are at the heart of this work,” City Manager Bo Ferguson said. “By hearing directly from residents, we can identify the leadership qualities our residents value most – qualities that support that mission and will help us recruit a police chief who will continue to strengthen trust and collaboration across our community.”
In addition to public feedback through the survey, Developmental Associates will collect input from local public safety leaders, current employees within the police department, and other stakeholders. This information will contribute to an evidence-based selection process including skill assessments, emotional intelligence testing, and several interview panels.
The city expects to finish its search within about 90 days. Updates about progress in selecting a new chief of police will be posted on Durham’s official website as they become available.
