City of Durham issued the following announcement on Sept. 13.
Launched in 2018, the goal of our Tree Planting Program is to plant 1,500 street trees each year, for a total of 10,500 new trees by 2025 in order to maintain and increase our street tree canopy in neighborhoods with fewer trees. In just four years, we’re more than half-way to our goal with 6,213 new street trees now planted through this program!
These neighborhoods, often located in historically underserved communities, provide many benefits to our residents including increased shade, lower energy bills, increased walkability, reduced air and noise pollution, absorbing stormwater runoff and carbon dioxide, and increased aesthetics.
For the upcoming planting season, our Downtown and Southside/College View neighborhoods will receive new trees, including the Hayti, North Carolina Central University, and Hillside Park neighborhoods. Tree planting will begin in November and should be completed by March 2023.
