The City of Durham released an update on April 26 regarding the ongoing NC-54 Waterline Replacement Project. The city thanked residents for their patience and provided details about upcoming construction activities and road closures.
The update is important for residents in the affected area, as it outlines when to expect temporary lane closures and possible short-term interruptions to water service. According to the city, additional information about the project can be found at: https://www.durhamnc.gov/3977/NC-54-Waterline-Replacement-Project.
Waterlines have already been installed on Stancell Drive and Downing Creek Parkway. Testing of these new lines is underway, and once complete, there will be short-term traffic control measures implemented to tie in water services and finish connecting the final segment of the waterline. This particular work is expected outside of the current two-week window covered by this update.
Between April 27 and May 1, contractors will connect a new 16-inch watermain along NC Highway 54 Service Road (Nelson Highway) with another new main across NC Highway 54 near Nelson Highway’s east end. After this connection, work will continue with installing additional water services along Nelson Highway. Testing and sampling are also scheduled during this period.
From May 4 through May 8, after testing is finished, contractors plan to begin reconnecting individual water services on Nelson Highway. Residents will receive advance notice if their service is temporarily interrupted. Asphalt patching along Nelson Highway will also begin during this time frame.
Temporary lane closures are anticipated on NC-54 Service Road (Nelson Highway) during both weeks mentioned above; however, two-way traffic will be maintained with flaggers directing vehicles as needed.
