The City of Durham announced on April 17 that work will continue on the Main Street and Broad Street waterline replacement project, with updates provided for the weeks ahead.
This update is important for residents and commuters in the area, as it outlines expected construction activities, traffic management plans, and possible service interruptions. The city has also thanked residents for their patience during this ongoing infrastructure improvement effort.
According to the announcement, two-way traffic at Markham Avenue and Broad Street will be maintained by flaggers from April 20 to April 24. During this period, contractors will continue installing waterlines within the intersection while beginning flushing and testing of the new water line along Broad Street. The city stated that “flaggers will be used to maintain traffic through the intersection” throughout these operations.
For the week of April 27 through May 1, contractors are scheduled to continue testing the new water line along Broad Street. After testing is complete, reconnections of individual property services to the new main will begin. Property owners affected by any necessary service interruptions will receive a notification at least 24 hours in advance. Additionally, delivery of traffic control devices and asphalt milling is planned for Main Street east of Iredell Street during this timeframe.
The city noted that on-street parking along Broad Street remains closed through early spring 2026 as part of ongoing construction efforts.
