The City of Durham announced on May 1 that work will continue on the Main Street and Broad Street waterline replacement project, with updates scheduled through mid-May.

The ongoing infrastructure improvements are expected to impact local traffic and water service as contractors progress with testing, installation, and reconnection activities. The city said it appreciates residents’ patience during this phase of the project.

According to the city’s announcement, between May 4 and May 8, contractors will test the new water line along Broad Street. After successful testing, they plan to begin reconnecting individual properties to the new main. Property owners affected by service interruptions will receive a 24-hour advance notice before any reconnections take place. During this same period, installation of the new waterline will continue along Main Street east of Iredell Street.

From May 11 through May 15, contractors expect to continue reconnecting services on Broad Street while also proceeding with further installation work east of Iredell Street on Main.

The city reports that on-street parking along Broad Street will remain closed until early spring next year. Additionally, westbound lanes of Main Street will be closed during work hours through late spring; however, two-way traffic is being maintained via a lane shift according to the city’s traffic control plan.
