The City of Durham announced on April 10 that ongoing work on the Main Street and Broad Street waterline replacement project will continue through late April, with updates affecting traffic and parking in the area.

This update is important for residents and commuters as it outlines upcoming construction activities and changes to local traffic patterns. The city said these efforts are part of ongoing infrastructure improvements in the area.

From April 13 to 17, flaggers will be present at the intersection of Broad Street and Markham Avenue to help maintain two-way traffic while contractors install new waterlines both south of Markham Avenue and within the intersection itself. The city noted that “flaggers will be onsite to maintain traffic through the Broad Street and Markham Avenue intersection April 13-17.”

Looking ahead, from April 20 to 24, contractors plan to begin flushing and testing the newly installed waterline along Broad Street. During this period, they will also deliver traffic control devices and materials to Main Street east of Iredell Street.

On-street parking along Broad Street remains closed through early spring as part of these construction activities. The city advises residents that more information about parking closures can be found online. Two-way traffic at Markham Avenue’s intersection with Broad Street will continue under flagger direction during mid-April.

Project contacts include Jeremy Farlow, Construction Team Manager for the City of Durham, and Brian Wilkerson, Project Manager for J.F. Wilkerson Contracting Company.
