City of Durham Police Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 20.

We would like to congratulate Lt. John Tyler on his retirement after 25 years of service with the Durham Police Department. 

Born and raised in Durham, Lt. Tyler began his public service journey with Durham County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in 1989. 

After serving nine years with EMS, Lt. Tyler joined Durham Police in 1998. During his time with Durham Police, he’s worked in various units including on Uniform Patrol, the Bike Unit, and the Slide Unit.

Lt. Tyler served as the assistant commander in District 5 where he was over Special Permits, Traffic and Crash Team (TACT), the Motor Unit, and Uniform Patrol. 

He also served as assistant commander over the Organized Crime Division, which includes Major Crimes, Vice and Narcotics, the Gang Unit, the Intelligent Unit, and the Selective Enforcement Unit. Lt. Tyler has been a public servant for 34 years.
