The City of Durham announced on Mar. 27 that several city services will have schedule changes in observance of Good Friday, which falls on April 3.
These adjustments are intended to inform residents about altered schedules and ensure continued access to essential services during the holiday period.
According to the announcement, the Solid Waste Management Division under Environmental and Street Services will be closed on Friday, April 3. Curbside garbage, recycling, and yard waste collections will proceed as usual from Monday through Thursday (March 30 – April 2), while food waste pilot collections are scheduled for Saturday, April 4. The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility, and Household Hazardous Waste Center (WDRC) will also close on April 3 but reopen for normal Saturday hours from 7:30 a.m. to noon on April 4.
Residents seeking updates or reminders about collection days can sign up through the Environmental & Street Service Department’s web page or by downloading the free Durham Rollout app available in Apple and Google Play stores.
Durham Parks and Recreation administrative offices and all facilities—including indoor pools—will be closed both Friday, April 3, and Sunday, April 5. However, facilities with rentals remain open. Athletic fields and picnic shelters continue to be available for rent during this time. Little River Lake will operate according to its regular schedule from Friday through Monday (April 3–6), opening daily at 6:30 a.m. For more information about parks programs or facility availability during office hours residents can call or visit the department’s website.
The Park Durham Customer Service Center is also set to close on Good Friday. On city-designated holidays like this one, downtown parking is free in designated areas including some garages and surface lots owned by the city. Residents interested in event parking rates should consult the Special Event Parking Calendar online.
GoDurham public transit services—including GoDurham ACCESS—will maintain normal weekday service on Good Friday but shift to Sunday-level service two days later. Riders are encouraged to check for real-time updates using Transit App or by calling customer service lines provided by GoDurham.
Finally, Durham One Call customer support closes for the holiday; however, residents may submit requests online via their smartphone app or leave messages that staff will process when business resumes next day. Emergency water main break or sewer overflow calls should be directed after-hours to Water Management’s emergency line.
