The City of Durham announced on May 1 that several road and lane closures will take place throughout the month as part of the ongoing American Tobacco District Waterline Replacement Project. The city thanked residents for their patience during the construction and provided updates on planned work and impacts to traffic.
The closures are scheduled to occur in phases, with specific dates outlined for each affected street. No construction work is planned on weekends when major events are taking place in the area, including May 2-3, May 9-10, and May 16-17. The city extended best wishes to Garmin Marathon participants and organizers who will be active during these periods.
During the weeks of May 4-8 and May 11-15, lane shifts and closures will impact Mangum Street, Roxboro Street, Dillard Street, Jackie Robinson Drive, and Blackwell Street. Work hours are set from 7 AM to 7 PM each day. Traffic control signs will be used to direct vehicles around closed or shifted lanes. Access to businesses near construction zones will be maintained throughout the project period.
Noise levels exceeding current city noise ordinances are expected during work hours due to waterline installation and pavement restoration activities. However, no disruptions to water or sewer services are anticipated according to city officials. Detours will be marked for eastbound Dillard Street using Mangum Street, Morehead Avenue, and Roxboro Street; access to parking facilities and public buildings such as the Durham County Justice Center is expected to remain available.
