The City of Durham announced on March 20 that several road and lane closures will take place over the coming weeks as part of ongoing waterline and sanitary sewer installation projects in the American Tobacco District. The city said weekend work is planned on Saturdays, with no work scheduled from April 3 to April 5 due to a city holiday.
The updates are important for residents, commuters, and businesses in the affected areas, as they may experience changes in traffic patterns, parking availability, and noise levels during construction hours. The city has provided additional information about the project at its official website.
According to the announcement, lane closures will occur on Jackie Robinson Drive between Blackwell Street and Mangum Street, Roxboro Street between Dillard Street and Jackie Robinson Drive, Mangum Street between Dillard Street and Jackie Robinson Drive, and Blackwell Street between Pettigrew Street and Jackie Robinson Drive. These closures are scheduled for the weeks of March 23 and March 30. Work will also take place on weekends, specifically March 21-22 and March 28-29.
During construction hours from 7 AM to 7 PM, noise levels exceeding current city ordinances are anticipated. However, access to businesses near work areas will be maintained throughout the project. On-street parking in affected zones will be closed temporarily. The city stated that no water or sewer service disruptions are expected during this period.
Coordination efforts have been made with local stakeholders such as the American Tobacco Campus (ATC) and the Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP) to minimize disruption. Water service connections along Blackwell Street are being coordinated with ATC, while work near DBAP is being managed alongside both ATC and the Durham Bulls.
No construction activities are planned for April 3-5 due to a city holiday. Project contacts include Wade Tong, Construction Team Manager for the City of Durham, and CJ Rizzo, Project Manager at Teraflex Group LLC.
