The City of Durham announced on March 13 that several road and lane closures will take place throughout March as part of the ongoing American Tobacco District Waterline Replacement Project. The city said Saturday work is planned for March 14 and 21, with initial waterline work on Blackwell Street expected to be completed by the end of next week.
The updates are important for residents and businesses in the affected areas, as they outline upcoming traffic changes, noise expectations, and access arrangements during construction. The city emphasized its appreciation for public patience during this phase of infrastructure improvements.
According to the announcement, lane closures will occur on Jackie Robinson Drive between Blackwell Street and Mangum Street, Roxboro Street between Dillard Street and Jackie Robinson Drive, Mangum Street between Dillard Street and Jackie Robinson Drive, and Blackwell Street between Pettigrew Street and Jackie Robinson Drive. These closures are scheduled at various times from March 14 through March 29. Traffic control signs will be used to manage lane shifts, while access to businesses near the work area will be maintained. On-street parking in these zones will be closed during work hours.
Work hours are planned from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with noise levels expected to exceed current city ordinances during those times. However, no disruptions to water or sewer services are anticipated throughout the duration of the project. Access to the Durham Freeway Westbound On-Ramp near the Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP) will also remain open.
