AbbVie announced on Apr. 22 a $1.4 billion investment to build a pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in Durham, North Carolina. The company said the new facility will support production of immunology, neuroscience, and oncology medicines, with construction set to begin this year and completion expected by the end of 2028.

The project is significant for Durham’s economy and workforce development. Over the next four years, AbbVie plans to hire 734 people for roles including engineers, scientists, manufacturing operators, and laboratory technicians. Additionally, more than 2,000 construction jobs are expected during development of the campus.

The first phase will include small volume parenteral drug product manufacturing facilities as well as laboratories, a warehouse, administrative offices, and employee wellness facilities. Once finished, AbbVie said the site will serve as its U.S. Center of Excellence for SVP manufacturing.

“This is a defining moment for the City of Durham. The largest private investment in the history of our city and a powerful signal that our city is competing – and winning – on a global stage,” said City of Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams. “With more than 700 new jobs and a strong commitment to our community, this project delivers both immediate impact and long-term opportunity.”

Dr. Mike Lee, chair of the Durham Board of County Commissioners said: “We are laser-focused on recruiting great paying jobs with meaningful career pathways for Durham residents… We are thrilled that AbbVie chose Durham County and look forward to this partnership.” Geoff Durham from the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce added: “Beyond the economic impact, this partnership highlights the company’s deep-rooted commitment to our community through sustainable growth and meaningful local engagement.”

The operation will be supported by a State Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG), which was approved earlier in April by North Carolina’s Economic Investment Committee; over its twelve-year term it is estimated to add $8 billion to North Carolina’s economy.

Joshua Gunn from the City Office of Economic & Workforce Development said: “We’re incredibly grateful that AbbVie chose Durham – bringing more than 700 high-quality jobs with six-figure average salaries… This win reflects what makes Durham special – strong partnership with the County [and] coordinated execution across every City department.”

Local officials expect further consideration for supporting awards at upcoming meetings this spring.
